Food is a very important part of any wedding particularly here in the Pacific where food is a major component of all significant personal and even business events. You are judged by the food you serve at your Wedding, I know people don't openly come out and say that but it is what happens at all events particularly at Weddings.
Having said that there are no specialized Wedding Caters here in Fiji but there are a number of companies that do ‘Outside Catering' in that they are able to cater to venues outside of hotels & restaurants, this is very useful if you are creating your venue or if you have chosen a venue such as a hall where you need to bring in the catering and many other aspects of your Wedding.
If you are getting married at a resort or restaurant generally speaking they will insist on doing all the catering themselves (which of course makes sense from a business point of view), this includes the wedding cake. Weddings at home or in a hired hall give you a bit more flexibility with regards to supplier options and in many cases are generally cheaper. Choosing the right cater is very important, make sure you ask around before deciding on who you use, its always useful to ask friends or work colleagues that have recently gone to a wedding what the food was like and if it was good (or even better - GREAT) and done then this is the time to put your investigative skills to work and find who they are and get a quote from them pronto!! As I mentioned earlier there are no formal business that I know of that specialize in this in Fiji, in most cases local caters simply work out of their home kitchen. I will be trying to get the contact details of these caters and let you know, once I know.
CAKES
Gone are the days that you must have a traditional fruit cake for your wedding, brides are making delicious choices from chocolate mudcakes to Bailey's cheesecake. It's your wedding, you can have what you want and not what tradition 'used' to dictate. In the case of your wedding cake I recommend firstly deciding on what you both want, if the groom wants chocolate cake and you want cheese cake no problem you can have a two tier cake everybody is happy. Wedding cakes can become quite costly so decide on how much you want to spend on it early on and try and stick to it best you can.
